Als fünffacher Grammy-Gewinner und Mitglied sowohl der Rock and Roll Hall of Fame als auch der Songwriters Hall of Fame gehört James Taylor zu den einflussreichsten zeitgenössischen Singer-Songwritern der US-amerikanischen Musikszene. Er wuchs behütet in einem liberalen Elternhaus in Chapel Hill (North Carolina) auf, litt gleichwohl an Neurosen und Depressionen, die 1965 in einem Suizidversuch mündeten. Seine drei Geschwister sind ebenfalls Musiker. Massiv drogenabhängig, ging er 1968 nach Großbritannien, wo er mit Unterstützung des Plattenproduzenten Peter Asher in London einen Vertrag bei Apple Records, der Plattenfirma der Beatles, erhielt und seine erste Solo-LP produzierte. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die Vereinigten Staaten brach er sich bei einem Motorradunfall beide Hände. Nach einer Entziehungskur kam endlich der erste Erfolg mit FIRE AND RAIN. Der Song, in dem er seine Drogensucht thematisierte. Mit YOU‘VE GOT A FRIEND kam der endgültige Durchbruch. Der Erfolg blieb. Als einziger Musiker überhaupt platzierte James Taylor in jedem der letzten sechs Jahrzehnte mindestens ein Top-10-Album in den US-Billboard-Charts.

A five-time Grammy winner and member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, James Taylor is one of the most influential contemporary singer-songwriters on the US music scene. He grew up sheltered in a liberal home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but suffered from neuroses and depression, which led to an attempted suicide in 1965. His three siblings are also musicians. Massive drug addict, he went to Great Britain in 1968, where, with the support of record producer Peter Asher in London, he got a contract with Apple Records, the Beatles‘ record company, and produced his first solo LP. On his return to the United States, he broke both his hands in a motorbike accident. After rehab, he finally had his first success with FIRE AND RAIN. The song, in which he made his drug addiction his theme. With YOU‘VE GOT A FRIEND he had his final breakthrough. The success remained. James Taylor is the only musician ever to have placed at least one top 10 album in the US billboard charts in each of the last six decades.
