Die rauchigste Stimme der Musikwelt

Als junger Mann durchlebte Roger Chapman eine schwere Zeit. Er schlug sich als Hilfsarbeiter auf dem Bau und in Fabriken durch, seine 17-jährige Freundin war schwanger, die ganze Lebenssituation prekär. Eine Zeit, die ihn prägte und die er später in vielen seiner Liedtexte verarbeitete. Aus dieser Phase stammt auch die Tätowierung „Love / Hate“ auf Chapman‘s Fingerknöcheln. Dann kam der große Durchbruch als Sänger der Bands Family und Streetwalkers. Chapman‘s raue, rauchige Stimme mit einem deutlichen Vibrato ist markant und einzigartig in der Musikwelt. Songs werden von ihm oft schreiend gesungen, bei Balladen entsprechend ruhig mit heiserer Stimme vorgetragen. Ende der 1970er Jahre startet der Brite dann solo durch. Songs wie Who Pulled The Night Down und seine Version von Let‘s Spend The Night ­Together sind bis heute seine Hymnen. Vor allem durch seine Live-Gigs erarbeitet sich Roger ­Chapman eine große Fangemeinde. Sein Hamburger Konzert und der Auftritt beim WDR-Rockpalast sind bis heute unvergessen.

The smokiest voice in the music world

As a young man, Roger Chapman had a difficult time. He made a living as an unskilled worker on construction sites and in factories, his 17-year-old girlfriend was pregnant, the whole life situation was precarious. A time that formed him and which he later reflected in many of his song lyrics. The tattoo „Love / Hate“ on Chapman‘s knuckles also came from this phase. Then he had his big breakthrough as singer of the bands Family and Streetwalkers. Chapman‘s rough, smoky voice with a strong vibrato is distinctive and unique in the music world. Songs are often sung by him screaming, and in ballads he performs them accordingly calmly with a hoarse voice. At the end of the 1970s, the Englishman started solo. Songs like Who Pulled The Night Down and his version of Let‘s Spend The Night Together are still his anthems today. Especially through his live gigs, Roger Chapman gained a large fan base. His Hamburg concert and his show at the WDR-Rockpalast are still unforgotten.
