Viele seiner Songs wie etwa ­„Spoonful“, „Smokestack Lightnin‘„ oder „Evil“ sind heute Blues Rock Standards und unzählige Male gecovert, auch von Musikern außerhalb des Blues. Mick Jagger, Tom Waits, John Fogerty und andere Superstars verweisen auf Howlin‘ Wolf als wichtige Quelle ihre eigenen musikalischen Werdegangs. Der Rolling Stone listet ihn auf Platz 31 der 100 größten Sänger und auf Platz 54 der größten Musikkünstler aller Zeiten. 1980 wurde er in die Blues Hall of Fame und 1991 in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen. Neben Muddy Waters, Little Walter und Sonny Boy Williamson II. ist Howlin‘ Wolf der erfolgreichste Sänger des Chicago Blues. Bis heute findet zu seinem Gedenken jährlich das Howlin’ Wolf Memorial Blues Festival in West Point, ­Mississippi statt.

Many of his songs such as „Spoonful“, „Smokestack Lightnin‘“ or „Evil“ are blues rock standards today and have been covered countless times, even by musicians outside the blues. Mick Jagger, Tom Waits, John Fogerty and other superstars point to Howlin‘ Wolf as an important source of their own musical development. Rolling Stone lists him 31st among the 100 greatest singers and 54th among the greatest musical artists of all time. He was elected to the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Along with Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson II, Howlin‘ Wolf is the most successful singer of Chicago blues. To this day, the Howlin‘ Wolf Memorial Blues Festival is held annually in his memory in West Point, Mississippi.
