Am Anfang war der Rockabilly! In der weißen Mittelschicht brodelte seit Ende der 1940er Jahre eine jugendliche Protestkultur, die sich zunächst über „weiche Drogen“ und die Literatur der Beat Generation definierte. Auch Bücher wie Der Fänger im Roggen, 1951 erschienen, erlangten unter Jugendlichen Kultstatus, weil sie erstmals ein spezifisch jugendliches Lebensgefühl beschrieben, in dem die gängigen Moralvorstellungen als eng und störend empfunden wurden. Eine einheitliche Jugendmusik fehlte jedoch zunächst noch. Die Anhänger der Beat-Literatur bevorzugten den Bebop-Jazz; ansonsten war das heimliche Hören von schwarzer Radiosender, deren Ghettomusik sexuell eindeutige Themen enthielt, ein weit verbreiteter Akt der Rebellion gegen die Eltern. Vor allem für diese Jugend hatte Sam Phillips mit seinem kleinen Label Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee, die Idee mit einer neuen, schwarz-weißen Popmusik. Der junge Elvis Presley, der 1954 zu Sun kam, diente ihm als Bindeglied zwischen den beiden musikalischen Hemisphären, denn er hatte einen guten Schuss Gospel und Rhythm and Blues in seiner Stimme...

In the beginning was rockabilly! In the white middle class, a youthful protest culture had been bubbling since the late 1940s, which initially defined itself through „soft drugs“ and the literature of the Beat Generation. Books like The Catcher in the Rye, published in 1951, also achieved cult status among young people because they described for the first time a specifically youthful attitude to life in which the usual moral concepts were perceived as narrow and disturbing. However, a unified youth music was still lacking at first. Followers of beat literature preferred bebop jazz; otherwise, secret listening to black radio stations whose ghetto music contained sexually explicit themes was a widespread act of rebellion against parents. It was primarily for this youth that Sam Phillips, with his small Sun Records label in Memphis, Tennessee, came up with the idea of a new, black and white pop music.
