Ray Charles Robinson grew up with his brother in poor conditions with his mother Aretha at the time of racial segregation. He learned to play the piano in a backyard. He went blind from glaucoma at the age of seven. Nine months earlier he had observed his brother drowning. After the early death of his mother, Ray left the school for the blind and began to build his career as a professional artist at the age of 14.
